I can not understand how anyone could be OK with less battery, as if phones didn't have too little to begin with currently. If I had one, I wouild replace the battery with a smaller one that fits, live with a little less time between charges and then change the IMEI to that of an older phone. It's a kick-ass phone, when it's not on fire. I think others have already said how dangerous a fire on a plane is even if it isn't an explosion. There is a defect in the design that will cause every phone to eventually fail. This actually seems to be more along the lines of an xbox red ring. I've said before, divorced from how completely unacceptable the failure mode is and looking solely at the statistics, the failure rate really isn't that remarkably high-but the failure mode is so completely unacceptable that every instance of it gets a LOT of coverage. Given the availability of non-exploding phones, it is an unnecessary risk but it's not a very big risk compared to things like traffic accidents and similar potentially lethal events that people rarely bother to worry about.Īgreed. You don't even have to be all that deficient at risk assessment: Yes, the explosion rate is unacceptably high for a consumer electronics widget but in absolute terms it is pretty low and even the ones that do explode are more of a fire hazard than a frag grenade. I can see that some people, perhaps persons that aren't great at risk assessment, would think "I bet the majority of these are actually fine, and the likelyhood mine will explode is tiny it's such a great phone, maybe I can just hang on to it and nothing bad will happen?" Why do people want to keep that fire hazard?Ī co-worker of mine had one (he bought his literally a couple of days before the first recall) and it's apparently an absolutely fantastic phone in basically every way, excluding the propensity for rapid unscheduled disassembly.
